Ubisurfer – Mobile Internet Netbook

What is it?
If you think the Ubisurfer is one of those new netbook, palm top, mini computer, things. You would be right… and wrong! Because the Ubisurfer mobile internet netbook has been designed with one particular purpose in mined. That purpose is allowing you to read this article… Ohhh… Aghhh.. No its not some fancy gizmo glasses, it has been designed to allow you to surf the internet, from virtually anywhere. It does this through a multitude of methods.

Firstly, you can link it up old school with an Ethernet cable (or USB) and access the web through the physical media of, wire. Secondly, it comes WiFi enabled allowing you to access the web through any WiFi hot spot. Finally, this clever little beast comes Sim Enabled with a 1 years subscription to Videophones 1800 surf package. This allows you to surf the net for 1800 minutes a month from anywhere that receives a mobile signal. This 1 year subscription is included in the price of the Ubisurfer and only costs £29.99 to renew for a second year.

The device itself measures in at a palm pleasing 2.21 x 13.8 x 3cm. This does not make it the smallest gadget on the market but it is impressive when you look at what it contains. The 7 inch screen displays at 800 x 480 pixels, the 128mb of ram makes surfing allot quicker and the 1 GB of onboard storage can be extended thanks to the external SD card slot. There is also 3 expansion USB ports, headphone and microphone jacks and a fully functioning QWERTY keyboard and track pad.

Why do I want it?
If you don’t like the internet, then this is probably not the gadget for you. However, if you like surfing the web and want to do it on the move, this could be the answer. We used to be restricted to using our mobiles or carrying our laptop and dongle around if we wanted to access the net while out and about.

Now the Ubisurfer allows us to access the internet, in proper IE browser mode, virtually anywhere in the world. Imagine being board on a train and you wanted to peruse GFM’s latest gadget review, not a problem with the Ubisurfer in your pocket. Off travelling around the world? Throw one of these in your rucksack and you will never have to look for an internet café again. Upload your new pictures and let everyone see what/who you are doing and how much fun you are having doing it.

You can also keep your social networking status (Facebook, Twitter) updated from anywhere that receives a mobile signal. Another huge bonus is that because the operating system is Linux based, you also can use and MS office style suit for spreadsheets/typing and use other onboard programs as well. This makes the Ubisurfer a lot more versatile than we expected making it quite an effective palmtop PC as well.

USB Riff Rocker

What is it?
The Riff Rocker is essentially a USB controller for a game. You plug the little rocker into a free USB socket, download the two games off the Riff Rocker website, and then thrash your little fingers off.

The downloadable games come with the usual 3 difficulty settings and are based around the guitar heroes-esc format of “press the correct coloured button in time with the on screen prompt”.

Why do I want it?

Hear at GFM towers we love the Guitar Heroes series of games but have come to the conclusion that you could never really call them “portable”. This is where the Riff Rocker shines, as it is light enough to be transported by pocket and small enough to be easily hidden within a work desk.

As the games are downloadable you don’t need to worry about transporting any software and as long as the unit you plug it into has an internet connection, you will never be more than a couple of clicks away from getting your button bashing fix.

This makes it perfect for an impromptu lunchtime concert where you can wow your co-workers with your guitar fettling skills and shake off some of those office blues. Suitable for new comers and pros the Riff Rocker is easy enough to pick up and really difficult to put down.

Hacked USB Memory Stick

Funny USB memory sticks are now that common they rarely even raise an eyebrow from us upon viewing, unless they are totally off the wall. This 2GB USB memory stick raised both eyebrows and even brought on a little titter. Any PC savvy person will cringe at the thought of jerking a laptop away with USB still attached to source items, and this is why this Hacked USB Memory Stick works.

It is guaranteed to grab the attention of people that see it sticking out of your PC/Laptop. And you can always live in hope that you will get that cocky comment from the office numpty remarking “what a tool you must be to rip a USB cord without noticing“, providing you with the perfect slap down opportunity of “shut it gimp, it’s a flash USB memory stick designed to make people like you look like a turd” (or your own friendly verbal putdown).

It is essentially a High Speed USB 2.0 2GB USB memory stick that is PC and MAC compatible. If someone found this lying around, why would they think to plug it in? This could make it the perfect storing place for those “special” pictures or videos. Could this be possible? Four of our favourite words/phrases making one glorious gadget. “Star Wars”, “Lightsaber”, “USB”, “Lamp”

Yes you can believe your eyes, it’s the Star Wars USB Lightsaber Lamp. I love this lamp!

This ingenious bit of gadgetry is 13 inches of pure Star Wars joy that is guaranteed to brighten any office space. It’s a pretty simple design… docking station attached to your USB port… lightsaber clicks into the station and collects its charge… turn it on using the button on the lightsaber grip… remove the lamp from the docking station and proceed to jump around your desk wielding your weapon making suspicious humming noises.

Just a usual day at the office! The USB Lightsaber Lamp is so cool, we are not even going to harp on about the fact that we think trade descriptions may have something to say about selling this as a “lamp”. It’s about as much use at bathing you work station in usable light as the standby button on your monitor. But like we said it really does not matter as it is one of the most attention grabbing, fun loving, geek showing gadgets we have seen in ages. Buy it and chose your destiny…

Eco-Button

A Gadget that helps to save the planet is not normally the first choice hear on GFM… But one that can also save you money and give your PC some protection peaked our interest. I give you, the Ecobutton.

This clever little thing is essentially a large LED back lit button that connects to your computer via a USB port. You give the large green button a push and hey presto, the magic happens, or in other words, you PC quickly goes into “Eco Mode”. Eco Mode is essentially standby mode that keeps you hard drive running, but does it while only using 1.8 watts of power (apparently that is loads less then most normal standby modes). I know what you are thinking; “Yawn” “Seen it before” “Who cares” and we thought the same when we first saw it. But read on as the best is yet to come.

In our opinion the cleverest bit about the ecobutton is the software it comes installed with, because once you take your computer out of eco mode (happens almost instantly) the ecobutton page pops up. This shows how much of your hard earned readies (£) and how much CO2 emissions you have saved while you were off gallivanting. Hear at GFM we don’t class ourselves as Eco warriors and we have never really thought about what our carbon footprint may be stepping on, but we found this information very satisfying because the page also carries a running total of exactly how much money and CO2 we has saved. We cant wait to tell some ranting hippy about the exact amount of CO2 we have spared and according to the manufacturers, this little Gizmo will save the average computer user around £50 pounds a year. £50!! Imagine the extra gadgets we could buy with that! Still we cant think of a more self gratifying gadget that will actually show you when it has paid for itself or when it has saved you enough to buy a pint.

As well as all its eco fighting and geniuses money conservation, the Ecobutton in its spare time enjoys, long walks, having fun and securing your computer. Yes, as an additional feature the Ecobutton also has a password protect function built into its software. This allows you to set up a password prompt for every time the Eco mode is cancelled, stopping co workers from sending incriminating emails or pesky family members hopping on the PC wile you are “indisposed”.

We love this little button hear at GMF. What other gadget can you buy that ticks so many boxes? It saves you money (for larger), it saves the world (sort of), it saves your PC (from enemies) and it does all of this for less than the price of a takeaway for 2.

In Short: The Ecobutton is small gadget with a small price tag that makes big changes to your bank balance, the environment and adds security to your PC.

USB Key Logger

Some ideas are so simple they are brilliant. This USB Key Logger is one of those simple yet brilliant gadgets. It is essentially an external USB dock that goes between the keyboard and the computer. The advantages of this means that the computer/user will never know it is there so happily go about their business, unaware they are being monitored. It has a hefty 2MB memory built in.

You might be thinking that 2MB is rubbish compared to your new 16GB pen drive, but that 2MB memory converts to whopping 2 million key strokes. If you don’t have the info you need in 2 million key strokes you’re never going to get it. It’s Windows, Linux and Mac compatible and even works with keyboards with built in hubs. Once you have your “data” you simply switch the USB Key Log into pen drive mode and download the contents in an advanced flash file format.

A 38mm external device that will allow you to view every key stroke someone made on a computer without them ever knowing. The possibilities are endless…well not endless but here are a few ideas:

Programmers/writers can use it as a constant back up for code/text in case of crashes or power cuts.
Keep an eye on your Childs “PC Usage”. (Works in chartrooms)
Monitor your partners Facebook and Friends Reunited “correspondence”. (Works on emails and blog posts)
Pretend to be psychic by monitoring friends/co workers PC input and then casually drop stuff into conversations. When they ask “How did you know that?” simply reply “I don’t know but I have being doing it allot recentlyyyyyy” tail off the sentence and give there forehead a long zoned out stare. Then say “I cant believe you did that!”.

If you don’t have a USB keyboard don’t worry, there is a PS/2 version ingeniously entitled the PS/2 Key Logger.
