What is it?
When we first heard about this “TV tablet”, we got extremely excited with ideas about what exactly a TV tablet could do, flew around the office. We were slightly embarrassed when we realized that this was infact a media player and not a pill but our interest was still peaked.

So, after repeatedly slapping ourselves for being so stupid, we took a closer look at the Mini Freeview Digital TV and Media Player. Portable media players are getting pretty common so to shake up this tired genre these clever bods have decided to shoe-horn a Digital TV receiver into the tiny 10.5 x 7.5 x 1.8 cm unit. “Portable tellies have been around since the 90s so that is not to impressive either” we thought. But this little portable gizmo has a lot more tricks up it sleeve.

The digital TV receiver has as an electronic program guide with subtitles function and can receive digital TV broadcasts up to 180km/h. So TV on the move is possible. Static TV is also impressive as a AC/DC mains adapter gives you unlimited battery and a portable detachable aerial helps pick up those elusive channels. Our favourite point about this magic little box is the fact it comes with AV leads and an aerial cable. This means you to hook it up to a TV and use it as a freeview box.

- Brilliant, especially as the digital switch over is very much upon us.

The media side of the unit is not to shabby either. There is no internal memory to speak of but there is a memory card slot allowing you to plum in an SD/MMC card up to 8GB allowing to watch or listen to your media library on the go as it supports AVI’s, MPEGs, MP3, WAV files and JPEGs. The internal battery allows for up to 3 hours of video or TV playback or up to 10 hours of audio. Easily long enough to watch your favourite flick or catch that episode of East Enders.

All the visuals are put through the surprisingly satisfying 3.5″ LCD screen that displays in 320 x 240 pixels and will display in 16:9 and 4:3. The audio can be listened to through the supplied head phones or the external speakers allowing you to share/annoy others with your viewing selections. No modern media player released to the current market is complete without the addition of some rubbish games built in. This media player delivers in spectacular style with two corkers on board (less said the better).

Why do I want it?
Portable media players are always fun but the general consensus within GFM towers is that we always find that we get board of downloading media then having to transfer it across. You could call us lazy and you would be correct. The obvious advantage of the Digital TV and multimedia player is that is has a digital TV receiver built in. This means you could just use it as, a portable TV making those lunch hours and train rides that bit more interesting.

The fact that you can hook it up to your TV and use it as a freeview box though is our favourite point because, as stated before, the digital switch over is looming and any analogue receiving tellies will no longer work. Yes you could go buy a twenty quid free view box from TESCO, or you could use this as an excuse to purchase a free view box that also acts as a portable media player. As the media player takes SD/MMC memory cards, you could also store/play your tunes and films through your TV as well. You can’t buy many freeview boxes that can do that, especially not for under a hundred notes.

The unit also comes with a USB connection allowing you to playback your selections from external media. We rarely see a gadget come with so many adapters:

1) AC/DC mains power adapter (UK only).
2) Headphones.
3) USB Cable.
4) Portable Antenna.
5) Aerial Adapter.
6) AV Cable.

Ice Shot Glasses

What is it?
We love simple ideas especially when they make our life easier and more fun. This little piece of bar gadgetry is one of those ideas. The Ice Shot Glasses are essentially a kit that allows you to make 12 ice shot glasses at once. The process involved is very complicated as it involves difficult tasks like filling the trays, placing the caps on and then putting them in your freezer. It odiously comes with instructions (just in case a woman has a go) JOKING!… (even with instructions it would be hard work for them) Yes we are all sexist pigs, but in a good way. The kit is hand wash only and the glasses, once frozen, hold approximately 30ml of booze.

Why do I want it?
We think the Ice Shot Glasses have a plethora of uses and twists, and could think of nothing better than coming up with great drinking ideas all day. But we have a lot of more important things to do (mainly sitting, making coffee and perusing the tinterweb), so we have chosen our best 3 ideas and conveniently displayed them below:

1) Freeze something other than water. Add a splash of colour or hint of flavour to your shot selection. Freeze apple juice to give your drinks a tangy zing or coffee for that hit of caffeine.

2) What a great way to “depth charge” or float your drinks. After seeing a crazy machine that floated a yager shot on our pints, we put one and one together and thought this would be a great way to do the same. Simply fill the ice shot glass with booze then drop it into your drink, give it a little more “pep” and keeping it cool. Team this up with idea 1 and you are onto a sure winner.

3) Have a smashing night. There is little more satisfying than downing a shot of vodka then throwing your glass at the floor like our Russian neighbours. With the ice shot glasses it is ace because you can do it and don’t have to worry about clearing up glass. You could go an extra step and make a target to throw the glasses at, miss and have another shot and another go. We think this could be the perfect start for a seriously messy night.

Drink Shots Gun

What is it?
The Shots Gun has taken the term “fancy a shot” to it’s literal limit. It is a novelty bottle stop that allows you to dispense booze in a highly entertaining manner. The shots gun works with all standard necked bottles and works on pumped pressure rather than triggered pressure. This means you can get a good steady flow of alcohol delivered to your tumbler. While not in use there is a small holster attached to the side of the stopper allowing you to neatly store your new weapon while allowing it to be easy to get at in case you get an itchy trigger fingerer.

Why do I want it?
We have not seen such a easy and fun way to dispense liquor in ages. This is a really entertaining way to fill your glass and virtually guaranteed to make mixing a cocktail (mine’s a Jack and coke thanks!) a lot more fun. As well as being super entertaining it is really easy to use. Slip the Shots Gun into the neck of your chosen tipple, give the pressure leaver a couple of pumps then point and shoot. Impress your friends or please yourself that the shots gun is a brilliant bit of booze gadgetry.

Samsung LED TV (Series 6 & 7)

What is it?
It’s a TV! “That’s not a gadget” we hear you sigh, but when a TV is as clever as this Samsung LED TV, it most definitely is. At first glance we were taken by its stylish look. A large screen set into a glass look piano black frame always looks the part and when you put that on a crystal necked stand, it really is quite striking. But that aint new.

Once turned on the picture quality is most definitely High Def and runs at 100mhz, to help reduce that edge blur effect you get in big fast action sequences. But again, nothing new. It is pretty new and mighty impressive when you consider the screen itself is only 1.2” thick! Now things are starting to look up. On closer inspection we found out that this stunning beast also has a multitude of connection possibilities. These stack up to an impressive 4 x HDMI ports, 2 x USB ports, a DTV Tuner, wireless LAN and internet TV. Yup, we did say wireless Lan and internet TV. It comes in a 40”, 46” or a 55 and has been designed as a single moulded piece of tech (like the ipod). Oh, and apparently its “green” and has a much smaller “footprint” than other tellies.

Why do I want it?
Unless you have a pretty special TV already, this would definitely be a “trade up”. For starters it looks sexier than a strip club to a monk and is thinner than a supermodels lunchbox. 1.2” thick for a TV is insane! To put it in context (sort of), it is thinner than the centre finger bone of the average mans middle finger (don’t try and work that out while drunk). Because it is so thin it easily fixes to your wall, allowing you to mount this piece of tech art anywhere that has a solid(ish) surface. Once powered up it has fantastic picture quality with a great refresh rate.

When you couple this up with the HDMI connections it possesses it really does scream Hi-Def gaming to us. Bored of watching films and gaming? Simply connect to the internet and view some much loved comedy YouTube clips. These Samsung LED TVs certainly beats being sat at your PC in the dingy study, and could make watching those “special” movies you like, that little bit more “satisfying”. Still think its not worthy to be classed as a gadget? Didn’t think so.
