This is the Nerf N-Strike Wii Blaster, it comes with 3 darts and a useful instruction book that tells you not to shoot your weapon at someone face (made us laugh). It also has a second, slightly more useful use. You can remove the barrel of the gun and replace it with a Wii remote allowing you to use it with you Nintendo Wii.

Why do I want it?
We love multi purpose gadgets and this little fire arm is no exception. You may be expecting that because it has two purposes it is trying to be a jack of all trades and master of none, but you would be wrong. In its fully assembled foam dart firing mode, the EX-3 (that’s its proper name) is surprisingly satisfying to use and the strength of its shot is quite surprising (see video bellow), especially to your ambushed victims.

In its Wii shooter form, the Nerf N-Strike Wii Blaster is also pleasing to use as the trigger is allocated to the bottom “fire” button on the Wii Remote. This means you simply swap your remote in place of the barrel, leaving all the top buttons still open and usable, then blast away to your hearts content. Measuring in at 28x23x6.5 cm it is just oversized enough to remain practical and imposing enough to make you feel like dirty Harry. WARNING this may lead to lots of standing in front of the mirror asking yourself if you feel lucky then calling yourself “punk”.

The downloadable games come with the usual 3 difficulty settings and are based around the guitar heroes-esc format of “press the correct coloured button in time with the on screen prompt”.

Why do I want it?

Hear at GFM towers we love the Guitar Heroes series of games but have come to the conclusion that you could never really call them “portable”.  This is where the Riff Rocker shines, as it is light enough to be transported by pocket and small enough to be easily hidden within a work desk.  

As the games are downloadable you don’t need to worry about transporting any software and as long as the unit you plug it into has an internet connection, you will never be more than a couple of clicks away from getting your button bashing fix.  

This makes it perfect for an impromptu lunchtime concert where you can wow your co-workers with your guitar fettling skills and shake off some of those office blues.  Suitable for new comers and pros the Riff Rocker is easy enough to pick up and really difficult to put down.

We giggled at this brave new name when we first heard it and sniggered at Nintendo’s marketing manager’s line of “every house should have a Wii”, but now this name holds no childish comical connotations for us as it has made such a big splash in the games console market.

The Nintendo Wii is like no other console that has made it to market and “in theory” should be ‘poo’. The graphics are last generation, it has little to no connectivity compared to rivals and it does not even double up as a DVD player. But despite these small flaws this stylish little box of magic is by far the most fun console available to buy.

The true genius behind the Wii is hidden in its controllers, namely its sensors. The Wii controller is unlike any before and houses many techno gizmos that allow it to sense when it is moved. This produces a completely different feel and gives you a totally different gaming experience. You actually have to swing your arms about like a mad man to play most of the games and for some reason; you don’t really mind doing it?

The console itself comes with Wii Sports (a selection of 5 sports games) which is a great introduction to the varied use of the controllers. Another built-in feature also lets you create your own avatar that holds stats and can be used as playable characters in some games.

You maybe thinking this is gimmicky and is nothing more than child’s toy, but we can honestly say because of its great design and innovative ideas it is by far the most fun console we play on and it really comes into its own when playing with friends.

Nintendo have taken a brave step here and succeeded! With the addition of items like the Wii Board (Wii Fit) and the new Motion plus Nintendo are clearly moving in the right direction and in doing so have successfully offered the Nintendo Wii as a new and exciting gaming experience suitable for all ages and sexes.
